Hi everyone Debbi Carberry here. Today I want to talk to you about self compassion and it is a popular set of words that are banded around a bit fair at the moment – being self compassionate.
Lots of people in my clinic talk to about self esteem and a lot of people talk to me about wanting to make their self esteem higher. When I’m talking to clients I really try to get them to understand that self acceptance and self awareness are really more important, in my belief, than self esteem.
I think that we need to care and love ourselves as we are and maybe that isn’t perfect – in fact I should hope that it isn’t perfect at all.
We are not perfect beings, we make mistakes, we trip up and it’s in those moments that we need to be most compassionate to ourselves – in the moments when we fall or when we are not our best selves.
These are times when we really need to be more self compassionate and self aware and so I guess what I think is really important is extending out the sort of kindness to yourself that you would to a stranger.
And for those who struggle and scratch their heads and say I don’t know if I can do this self compassion stuff – what I suggest to mums in particular, as I do work with a lot of mums, is to imagine if somebody was talking to your child the way you talk to yourself.
Imagine what you would say to your child if someone had hurt them or if they had made a mistake and use that same kind approach and beautiful language to self soothe.
So be compassionate – accept who you because you are fine exactly as you are.
And have a great day.
